15th ANNUAL ISLAND CHALLENGE Sept. 5 ~ 7, 2014 Victoria, BC |
This year was the 15th Annual Island Challenge, hosted by the Victoria Chapter of the VCCC. It would have been grand to have been able to give every registrant one of these crystal vintage cars (shown above) -- as Crystal is the modern 15th anniversary gift!! But, instead, each registrant received a special commemorative licence plate, as well as a unique DVD of this special weekend. |
The
Co-Chairs for this tour were Paul Taylor and Pat Meehan; with
volunteers: Bob Tuttle, Liz Taylor, Jane Thomas, Bill Bouchard, John
King and others helping out in various capacities.
The host hotel was the Howard Johnson Hotel & Suites on Elk Lake Drive, Victoria.
An
action-packed weekend had been planned, starting with an Early Bird
Tour out to the Victoria Airport, to visit the Viking Air manufacturing
plant. The comprehensive two-hour tour of the facility gave
everyone a much better understanding of how planes are made.
Participants got to go into a plane -- hot off the press, so to speak
-- complete with the "new plane smell" (similar to the new car smell!!).
![]() ![]() After
the tour, most folks stopped for an early dinner at Mary's Bleue Moon
Café. A Meet & Greet session took place back at the hotel --
where everyone could sit around and socialize.
|
Saturday
started early with a full breakfast at 7:30 a.m. The cars left at
8:30 a.m. for a 26.6 mile (75 minute) driving tour -- ending at Pearson
College of the Pacific.
![]() ![]() We
met with David Hawley, Director of the College, for a brief info
session about the College; and then we were split into two groups, for
a guided, walking tour of the College. Lunch was served in the
College cafeteria.
After
lunch, the return route took us to Dr. Jim Colwill's home to view his
world famous Mascot Collection (more than 700 mascots); and his wife,
Sheila, welcomed everyone to see their beautifully restored, Samuel
Maclure-designed heritage home.

Saturday
evening started with cocktails at 6:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 7:00
p.m. One of the Victoria Chapter members (Bill Bouchard)
presented a beautiful DVD production showing the cars on the tour, as
well as the various activities of the tour. This special DVD was
made available to participants after the weekend.
Then, Dr. Jim Colwill gave an interesting talk and video presentation about some of his more unique mascots.
This
was a conclusion of the official Island Challenge, but everyone was
invited to attend the Victoria Chapter's Annual Corn Roast, at Heritage
Acres on Sunday. Many folks did attend -- for a full report and
photos of the Corn Roast, please click on this link: 2014 Corn Roast

There
were fourteen (14) cars registered for this year's Island Challenge --
with Campbell River having the most participants -- 5 cars.
