On the first Sunday Run of 2013, 17
members of the Victoria Chapter, driving 12 vintage cars, met at the
Pacific Forestry Centre. It was a fine day for a drive -- a bit
on the cool side, but dry and quite bright -- the sun even came out for
a few moments during the afternoon.

Pete
Seward's route led us from the Forestry Centre out along Burnside
Road to the Old Island Highway. From there the route followed Six
Mile Road to Atkins, through to Veterans' Memorial Parkway. We
headed for the Highlands, and drove along Millstream Road, Millstream
Lake Road, Munn Road and along to Prospect Lake Road. We skirted
the Lake and turned on West Saanich Road, for a neat circular
tour: West Saanich, Old West Saanich and back along Sparton Road.

26
members were treated to some delightful rural scenery, along the
winding and challenging roads of the Highlands. The roads were
clear, but there was evidence of snow along the sides of the roads, and
we saw several frozen ponds and sloughs.
Our
destination was TIA'S HERITAGE CAFÉ, at the corner of West Saanich and
Sparton Road. They were expecting our group and everyone was able
to find a seat and enjoy beverages and refreshments from the varied
menu.

Tia's Heritage Café is located in the building that was built in
1913 by Sam McCullough, as a store, on property owned by Jack
Durrance. The store was run by Jack Findley, who married
McCullough's daughter. Findley also acted as Post Master, which
meant that the Post Office was much more conveniently located for the
residents than it had been previously. Until then it had been at
Heal's School, about a mile farther down the road, where 30 or so
children learned their 3Rs.
